Beaglehole Applauds U21s’ Progression

Development Squad manager Steve Beaglehole believes Thursday’s Premier League International Cup Quarter-Final win over Everton was evidence of how much his side have progressed this season.

The Foxes booked their spot in the semi-finals of the competition after edging the Toffees 4-3 on penalties, with the score finishing 2-2 after extra-time.
Everton’s Chris Long opened the scoring after just 10 minutes before Harry Panayiotou was on target shortly after to ensure it finished even after 90 minutes.
Panayiotou grabbed his eighth goal in as many games four minutes into extra-time, but substitute Harry Charsley forced the tie to penalties with a neat finish.
Everton gained an early advantage in the shoot-out, scoring all of their first three penalties, while Simonas Stankevicius was denied from 12 yards by Russell Griffiths.
But an inspired Adam Smith first denied captain Jon Joe Kenny, then Tyias Browning, before Liam Moore netted the decisive spot-kick to send City into the last-four.
“We could have won the game in 90 minutes because we had the better chances,” Beaglehole told Foxes Player. “We got our noses in front in extra-time, and I thought we might have done enough, but they came back.
“We had a few tired legs in extra-time – playing on Monday probably took it out of us as well. We saw it through to penalties, and again, we showed great desire to get through.
“Adam Smith was probably the hero of that, along with all the lads who took their penalties – you’ve got to admire people who take them. We only missed one, but Adam made two great saves.
“I’m delighted that we’re through, but the way we got through was great as well. We knew Everton would push us all the way. They hammered us in the first game of the season. There was a similar side out there on Thursday, so it just shows you how far we’ve come.”
Beaglehole’s outfit next face Manchester United in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Monday at King Power Stadium (7pm kick-off) knowing a win could move his side top of the league.
Reflecting on recent results throughout the Club, the Under-21s boss added: “It’s fantastic. We’ve mirrored the Under-18s, who got to the FA Youth Cup Semi-Final. The first team have two great results too, so the spirit in the camp is great.
“If someone had said to me at the start of the season that in April, we’d be sitting second in the U21 Premier League and in the semi-final of this prestigious cup, I would have certainly taken it. All credit to the players – they’ve worked hard and they’ve got a great team spirit.”
