Beaglehole: Resilience Paid Off

Development Squad manager Steve Beaglehole believes his side’s resilience was key to another comeback after a 2-2 Barclays U21 Premier League draw with Norwich at Belvoir Drive on Monday.

The Foxes went behind after 36 minutes after a low finish from Sam Kelly before Ben Chilwell hauled City level with just 20 minutes to go.
Cameron Norman put Norwich into a 2-1 lead on 72 minutes, but Joe Dodoo struck an injury-time equaliser with a sweet half-volley .
“I’m pleased that we didn’t lose,” said Beaglehole. “We said at half-time that we needed to win the game, but we certainly didn’t want to lose it. This group never give in.
“It wasn’t a typical Under-21s game. There were some ferocious challenges, and there were a lot of long balls played. It was a good test of character because we had to come back from a goal down.
“We changed one or two players at half-time and we had one or two playing in unfamiliar positions, but we were positive. We ended up with four strikers on in the second half.
“Ben Chilwell got us a great equaliser, and then he was a bit unlucky with Norwich’s second goal. He misread the header, but he’s a young player, and he showed his true potential with the goal he scored.
“We’ve gone 2-1 down, but still went for it. A quick throw-in from James Pearson saw the ball fall to Joe Dodoo, who produced a terrific finish. Their goalkeeper played very well, and it needed something special to beat him.
“We always feel that we can score, and to come from behind twice speaks volumes for our resilience.”
Beaglehole applauded the attitude of Dodoo in particular, who maintained a high work-rate throughout the match, and fully deserved his late leveller.
He added: “Joe can get frustrated at times. He’s technically one of the best players in the group. I keep saying to him that being a skilful player is using his technique at the right time.
“He’s just fitting that into his game at the moment. Sometimes he makes decisions where he should pass it, and sometimes he should dribble the ball when he does pass.
“Joe’s a young player, and he’s still developing. He’s scoring goals at this level, and he’s always a threat. Potentially, he’s one of our best players.”
