City Survival Followed Closely By Fuchs

After signing for Leicester City on a three year deal, defender Christian Fuchs revealed that he was already an admirer of the Club’s character.
The versatile left-back will join the Foxes on Wednesday 1 July following four seasons at Schalke 04, where he played Champions League football against the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal – sides he could potentially come up against in his debut season at City.

And upon signing, Fuchs explained that he followed City’s remarkable surge to Premier League safety in the 2014/15 campaign, labelling it ‘the great escape’.

He said: “I followed them last season, and it was an impressive escape at the end of last season.

“Everybody knows about it, everybody saw it and everybody’s talking about it – the great escape. I’ve seen other people working here, how they play, and it’s fun to watch.”

Fuchs believes that alongside performing in England’s top flight came the enticing prospect of playing under manager Nigel Pearson, whose entertaining style of football caught the defender’s eye.

“I think the philosophy of the coach fits me well,” Fuchs continued. “He gave me a nice phone call. He told me about the philosophy that Leicester is playing.

“He’s simply a very nice chap. He’s a cool guy. He said to me that he’s very personal – he knows how to handle the players on a personal level, and he also convinced me about Leicester."

Before linking up with Nigel Pearson’s outfit on their pre-season in Fuchs’ home nation, the defender will first fly out to Russia to captain his country, who he has played for over 60 times, as they continue their UEFA 2016 European Championship Qualifying campaign.

Austria have surged ahead at the top of Group G, registering four wins and a draw in their opening five fixtures. They sit two places above Fabio Capello’s men heading into the fixture on Sunday 14 June.

“It’s a very important game for us,” the defender added. “If we win that game we have a big chance to qualify for the Euros next year.

“We’re in first spot, with Russia close to us, which is why the game is important. I hope I will come back with us still in first spot.”
