There were records aplenty for Leicester City after their 3-0 victory over Newcastle United moved them to the top of the Barclays Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

It was a game that saw striker Jamie Vardy score for the 10th consecutive Premier League match to equal Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record, while City’s lofty new league position stood in stark contrast to the same time last year, when they propped up the table after 13 games.

Saturday's game saw Claudio Ranieri’s side blow their opponents away with a vibrant and irresistible style of play that has seen them lose just once all season. In fact the victory at St. James’ Park was their 10th away Premier League match without defeat – a run stretching back to March.

And while that particular statistic impressed Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, who was again influential in midfield, he insisted that the Foxes’ success was easy to explain.

He told : “Since March? It sounds good that doesn’t it? We’re just a solid team. We play to our strengths and try to not play to our weaknesses.

“It’s not rocket science. The gaffer has come in, changed a few things, improved a few things and it’s working. It’s hard to pick a fault at the minute. We’ve stopped going goals behind, we’ve started leading games and sticking it out. The more we can do that, the better.”

Alongside N’Golo Kanté in central midfield, Drinkwater again played a crucial role as the Foxes powered to their fourth consecutive victory in the league, moving them to 28 points – one clear of second placed Manchester United.

It was Vardy who opened the scoring just before the break with his record-equalling goal, before fellow strikers Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki added strikes in the second half to complete the 3-0 win.

And for Drinkwater, the confidence that City were able to translate into their performance meant the result was rarely in doubt. He added: “As far as dominance goes, we were definitely [in control]. They took a few counters but other than that we were so dominant and we never felt like we were about to lose the game at all.

“They’ve got some good individual players and it’s maybe not quite happening for them as a team right now. Me and NG (N’Golo Kante) tried to track as much as we could and then do the turnover and play our counter attacking game.
