Eaden Looking For Competitive Edge

Development Squad coach Nicky Eaden was delighted to see the side emerged unscathed from their first test of pre-season on Tuesday but is keen to step up the intensity.
The Foxes fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Birmingham’s Wast Hills Training Ground courtesy of a Denny Johnstone double, but it was getting minutes under the players’ belts that was the priority.

With another friendly against Derby County on the horizon on Friday, Eaden is keen to keep the tempo high in matches in order to prepare the team as best he can for the challenges they will face in the upcoming Barclays U21 Premier League campaign.

He told Foxes Player: “I think we’ve come out of it with no injuries and we’ve played two different teams - 45 minutes each. We’ve got another game on Friday, which will possibly be similar and into next week we’ll look to increase the playing time for the lads.

“You can run as much as you want [in training] but in your first game you know you’re going to be struggling and blowing because it’s different types of running.

“In a match there are lots of little sprints and nothing is measured. You may have to make 10 runs or you may have to make 12, you don’t know. That’s why you do these pre-season friendlies to try to get as close to match fitness as you can.

“If you haven’t got that competitive edge and the tempo is low then it’s going to be an even bigger shock when you get into those league games. So you want to get the tempo of the games up and you want to get it as close as you can to a competitive game so it’s not as big of a shock when you do get into the league games.

“If not you’ll have to play two or three league games to get up to speed.”
