Eaden: Plenty To Take Forward

Leicester City Development Squad coach Nicky Eaden says his side must tighten up their defensive game after a 3-3 Barclays U21 Premier League draw with Southampton on Monday.

The Under-21s went behind early on but put City in control at the break. The Saints then equalised on the hour mark but the Foxes regained the lead 15 minutes from time through Anthony Knockaert.
Steve Beaglehole’s youngsters were pegged back in the last minute when Ryan Seager made it 3-3, denying City a fifth win in six games in all competitions.
“We can take credit for scoring three goals through the senior lads and credit for getting back into the game after a sloppy start,” said Eaden.
“They’re poor goals to concede. At the start of the game we seemed flat with no tempo but we got back into the game, started creating chances and got a couple of goals.
“In the second half we didn’t keep enough controlled possession. There were times where we could have really taken the sting out of the game and kept hold of the ball.
“You’ve got to learn from what happens in games and if you recognise the same situation you don’t make the same mistakes.
“I don’t think we showed the same desire in one against one situations as we did against Benfica and Schalke – we made it a lot tougher for them than we did for Southampton.”
Reflecting on a good run of form for the Under-21s, Eaden says he’s hopeful of progressing in the New Year, with West Ham United up next on Monday 5 January.
Eaden added: “We’ve bounced back in the league after a poor start to the season and got back on track. At one stage we looked as if we were going to be cut adrift but it’s a really tight league from third or fourth right down to the bottom of the table. Like last season when we started poorly, but we’ve kicked on.
“We’ve got to finish the Premier League International Cup group stages off against Manchester City but we’re already through to the next stage. That’s a massive positive for us.
“Another positive is we’ve recovered from the poor start. It’s more the manner of performances. We’ve looked more threatening going forward and we’ve looked more solid defensively.
“There’s still plenty to work on and there’s plenty to take forward going into the second part of the season.”
