Kasper Schmeichel says Leicester City’s outstanding recent defensive record is down to hard work right across the team.

The Foxes are preparing to take on Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League on Tuesday night at King Power Stadium and they’ll be keen to maintain the kind of defensive stability that has seen them keep four clean sheets in five.

It’s an impressive record given the fact that the team’s first clean sheet didn’t arrive until late October, but another one against the Reds on Tuesday would certainly give them a good platform to go on and secure three points.

But Schmeichel was keen to point out that it’s the strikers' willingness to run that helps their style of play to work as they look to keep opposing teams from scoring.

He told Foxes Player HD: “I just think we’ve been quite solid. I think clean sheets are nice, but they’re not that important other than the fact they give you a base to win the game. But I’d much rather be winning games 3-2 than getting a clean sheet and drawing.

“Everyone has contributed. We have a very Italian style of defending. We sit back and absorb the pressure. We’re very compact and difficult to play through or break down. You can’t play that way without having the outlet in the strikers and forward players that we’ve got.

“The defence have all been great, very stable players who you know what you’re getting from every time they step onto the pitch but also the midfield has to be very disciplined to play the way that we do and it’s a style of football that we’ve had to get used to.

“That maybe explains the wait for the clean sheets but we’ve trained a lot and found a way of making it click and at the moment it’s going okay.”

Liverpool have had fixtures in both the League Cup and the FA Cup in the days since City’s last game, meaning the Foxes have had the benefit of a few extra days of rest before the game – something Schmeichel hopes can aid them.

He added: “It’s been nice. A couple of days away to recharge the batteries and I’m feeling fresh now. Obviously for the physical side it’s good, given the amount of games we’ve played. Getting away and having a little break and getting your head back on. Just thinking about something else for a few days is good for everybody.”
