Academy graduate Jeffrey Schlupp was relieved to cap his performance against Norwich City with a goal after being asked to play a more advanced role.

Claudio Ranieri sprung a surprise on Norwich by leaving out in-form Riyad Mahrez and pushing Schlupp up into a left midfield role, after featuring heavily for the Foxes at left back this season.

It was a move that worked though, with Schlupp scoring early in the second half after Jamie Vardy had given City the lead to repay that faith and once again underline his versatility.

Schlupp started his career as a striker but has played in a number of positions for the Foxes. His pace and power make him a threat all over the field – something Norwich found out to their cost on Saturday as City ran out 2-1 winners.

“I feel comfortable there,” Schlupp said of his more adventurous role. “I played the majority of my football there last season and I think I’ve done well there.

“I’ve slotted in a left back and done OK there, but I feel comfortable playing left midfield too.

“I’ll do my part for the team. Anywhere the manager wants me to play, I’ll do it as best I can so hopefully I’ve repaid him with my goal that helped us come away with the three points.”

It was a first goal of the season for Schlupp, who admitted to feeling a sense of relief when the ball finally hit the back of the net.

“I was happy to get a goal having played there (in midfield) for the first time this season. Hopefully I can get many more.

“I’d missed a few chances against West Ham in the cup so I thought when I got into the box I had to keep calm, keep composed, hit it hard and low and hopefully it’ll go in, as it did.

“It was a bit of a relief and a weight off my shoulders to be able to slot into that left midfield like I did with a goal. It was nice.”
