Wes Morgan’s thrilling 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup run with Jamaica ended in a hotly-contested final defeat to Mexico on Sunday.

The Leicester City captain played a significant part in helping the Reggae Boyz to their first ever final, where they took on a Mexican side who went on to lift the Gold Cup for a record seventh time.

Jamaica’s counter-attacking style of play saw them top their group ahead of Costa Rica, El Salvador and co-hosts Canada, before a slender 1-0 victory over Haiti in the quarter-finals set up a last four clash with the USA.

The Americans, boosted by home advantage, would be undone by two quick-fire goals from Morgan’s nation in front of over 70,000 fans in Atlanta.

Mexico needed extra-time to overcome Panama 2-1 in the other semi-final, meaning Jamaica faced a challenging task to secure their first Gold Cup title against a side ranked 36 places higher than them by FIFA.

Firm favourites El Tricolour took the lead in Philadelphia through PSV Eindhoven midfielder Andres Guardado with 30 minutes on the clock. Then, in 14 second-half minutes, strikes from FC Twente’s Jesús Corona and Club América’s Oribe Peralta put the Mexicans 3-0 up.

Jamaica pulled one back with 11 minutes to play through Vancouver Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks, but Mexico’s dominance beforehand meant the Caribbean nation’s first ever Gold Cup Final would end in defeat.

Morgan’s tireless contribution was an undoubted one throughout the tournament. He played every minute at the heart of defence in the Reggae Boyz’s enthralling Gold Cup run.
