LCFC’s Top 10 Games Of 2015/16: Part One

LCFC.com reflects on one of the most memorable seasons in the history of football, as Leicester City stormed to a historic Premier League title.
Having lifted the Championship trophy just three years earlier, the Foxes’ swashbuckling style of counter-attacking play saw them go toe-to-toe and shock the giants of English football.

Here’s part one of Leicester City’s top 10 games of the 2015/16 campaign…

10. Leicester City 4 Sunderland 2

Tested for the first time under new manager Claudio Ranieri, the Foxes swept aside Sunderland with a superb display in the sun at King Power Stadium.

It took just 11 minutes for City to score their first goal of the 2015/16 campaign, as Jamie Vardy got the first of his 24 Premier League goals with a fine header.

Then, a six-minute brace from Algeria ace Riyad Mahrez saw Ranieri’s men carry a 3-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, strikers Jermain Defoe and Steve Fletcher found the back of the net for Sunderland either side of Marc Albrighton’s low drive in a game that well and truly gave the Blue Army a taste of what to expect from the Foxes in 2015/16.

9. Leicester City 3 Stoke City 0

After an action-packed month, the Foxes rounded off January with a ruthless performance against a Stoke City side who were fresh off the back of a battling draw against Arsenal.

Sitting second in the table ahead of the game, City dispatched the Potters in style and it was Danny Drinkwater who would put his side ahead with his first Premier League goal for the Club.

Jamie Vardy’s 16th goal of the season made it 2-0 just after the hour mark, while a sublime piece of skill from Riyad Mahrez set up Leonardo Ulloa, who rounded off the scoring.

The victory meant City sat top of the Premier League at the end of January – a position they would retain until the end of the season.

8. Everton 2 Leicester City 3

A victory on Merseyside would see Leicester City secure the Premier League’s top spot on Christmas Day, and that’s exactly what happened.

A brace of Riyad Mahrez penalties and Shinji Okazaki’s effort on 69 minutes saw City earn a first win at Goodison Park in three decades.

The win meant City sat top on Christmas Day, while also setting another Premier League record following an amazing first five months of the season.

No team had ever been bottom of the Premier League on Christmas Day one year and top the next – until Leicester City, of course.

7. Leicester City 2 Liverpool 0

Defeating Liverpool is never an easy task and after the narrow loss to the Merseyside outfit on Boxing Day, Leicester knew exactly what to expect.

Breaking down a solid back line would take something truly magical – enter Jamie Vardy and his thunderous right foot.

The England international striker latched onto a brilliant ball over the top from Riyad Mahrez before connecting perfectly to send a stunning 30-yard half-volley past Simon Mignolet.

Vardy showed a different side of his game 11 minutes later, instinctively turning in Shinji Okazaki’s deflected shot to seal the points for City.

6. Newcastle United 0 Leicester City 3

There was much focus on striker Jamie Vardy heading into the clash, as he had the chance to equal Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in 10 straight Premier League games.

Well, Vardy delivered the goods, as did the Foxes, who put in a silky performance to return from St. James’ Park with all three points.

Vardy’s record-equalling strike came on the stroke of half-time, while further efforts from Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki made it 3-0.

The win was one of seven in eight games from October to December that saw Claudio Ranieri’s men become serious contenders for the Premier League title.
