Before Leicester City’s game against West Ham United, a very special cherry tree was planted in the Memorial Garden to commemorate the 2013/14 Championship title win.
Donated by former Leicester City star and Scotland international midfielder Davie Gibson, the tree was set alongside two ceramic flowering tubs in a special area created by Dave Lay, the Club’s gardener. Between 1962 and 1970, Davie was the creative inspiration at the heart of some fantastic Leicester City teams and is held in high esteem by all who saw him play with such distinction during that time. He played in two FA Cup and League Cup Finals for City, and scored in both legs of the 1964 League Cup triumph.
To mark the occasion, Davie gave a short speech at a ceremony attended by fellow legend Alan ‘The Birch’ Birchenall, and paid tribute to his departed friends from his time at Leicester City. These included manager Matt Gillies, coach Bert Johnson, and fellow players John Sjoberg, Jimmy Goodfellow, Jackie Sinclair, Terry Heath, Derek Hogg, Derek Dougan and Nick Sharkey.
