Mahrez And Algeria To Face Ivory Coast

Riyad Mahrez and Algeria’s reward for reaching the Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-Finals is a tough date with the Ivory Coast on Sunday night.
In a meeting of the two tournament favourites in Malabo, whoever can land the knockout blow on the night will put themselves in a strong position to go on and clinch the title.

With Algeria having won one and lost one of their opening two fixtures, their tournament fate hung in the balance against Senegal on Tuesday night, but Mahrez’s opener and another from Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb and progress to the last eight as Group C runners-up.

In Group D, Ivory Coast edged into the quarter finals at the top of the table after former Leicester City player Max Gradel’s goal handed them a 1-0 win over a talented Cameroon side.

It was a group where five of the six fixtures ended 1-1, meaning Gradel’s strike helped to narrowly avoid the drawing of lots to decide who faced Algeria, although that was not the case with Mali and Guinea, who were tied second – the draw taking place on Thursday.

If they advance from the quarter-finals, the Desert Foxes will play the winner of the first quarter final between Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday 4 February.
