After helping Leicester City to a 2-1 pre-season win over Burton Albion, striker Jamie Vardy says he was happy to get 90 minutes under his belt ahead of the new campaign.

A goalless first half at the Pirelli Stadium was followed by a switch in formation. That proved key, as Vardy first pinched the ball in midfield and raced through to slot in, before nodding in over goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin just seven minutes later.

Claudio Ranieri handed all of Tuesday’s starting XI a full 90 minutes as his side gears up for the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League opener against Sunderland at King Power Stadium on Saturday 8 August.

“It was a good run out for some good match fitness,” Vardy told Foxes Player HD after the win. “I thought we defended well as a team and then obviously got the two goals to come away with the victory.

“We just needed to be a bit more ruthless when switching the ball and attacking. Towards the end we changed formation and went with two upfront and one behind and it started to work out for us because we got in behind them.

“I should have had more goals, but that’s just how things go. That’s exactly what these friendlies are for – getting ready for the start of the season.

“It’s just about getting match fit. Obviously it’s the start of the season soon, so everybody will be raring to go.”

Both of Vardy’s goals came in front of the end housing the Blue Army, who again travelled in force to watch their side ready themselves for another term in England’s top flight.

Ever appreciative of their impact from the stands, Vardy added: “They’re always a good following – it doesn’t matter if it’s pre-season or during the season, and it’s showed because they’ve filled the away end again.”
