Morgan’s Jamaica Edged Out Again

Wes Morgan’s Jamaica face an uphill task to reach to Copa America knockout stages, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Paraguay overnight.

A first-half goal from Edgar Benitez was enough to consign the Reggae Boyz to a second successive single-goal reverse in Chile, meaning they must beat Argentina in their final group game to have any chance of progressing.
Back in Antofagasta following their opening defeat to Uruguay, Morgan’s men produced another resolute display on their Copa America debut against a talented Paraguay side that had held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in their opening game.
But with nine minutes of the first half remaining, Jamaica goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr raced out of goal to head a clearance straight into Benitez, whose block sent the ball spinning back into the net.
Paraguay dominated much of proceedings, but had to survive a late Jamaica rally, which included a fine drive from Reading’s Garath McCleary that flew just wide and a late header from Morgan, who played the full 90 minutes, that also beat the upright.
Jamaica must now beat group leaders Argentina in Vina del Mar and hope Paraguay can overcome Uruguay to give the Reggae Boyz any chance of progressing as one of the two best third-placed teams in the three groups. The game kicks off in the early hours of Sunday morning.
