Peake Delighted With Disciplined Win

Leicester City Under-18s manager Trevor Peake praised his side’s performance in their 1-0 FA Youth Cup win over Wigan Athletic at King Power Stadium on Wednesday.

The young Foxes advanced to the Fourth Round of the competition after an own goal from Sean Harrison proved to be enough to .
Setting up a , Peake felt his side fully deserved the narrow victory over the Latics, who had won nine out of their last 10 fixtures in all competitions.
“It was quite scrappy,” Peake told Foxes Player after the victory. “We knew they were going to be a tough opposition – they’re top of their league. They’ve got some strengths that we saw on analysis that they showed tonight.
“They’ve scored a lot of goals – nearly 50 in their league – and they haven’t lost since September so their confidence is really high. We got what we expected really.
“When you look at the positions that we got into within their 18-yard box and compare it to their chances, there were very few.
“Our toes were curling up a bit in our boots when we gave away the free kick in the 94th minute, but Max Smith-Varnham did well to get it away from our goal, and that was the end of the game.
“We haven’t come up against such robust players, if you like. They’ve got a really good system and played two upfront which is not unheard of, but more unusual when we’re playing teams outside of the league.
“They have some really good ideas. On the analysis you could tell that they were thinking about the game, with short free kicks and corners, and we had to really be on our toes and concentrate for the full 95 minutes to make sure they didn’t benefit from that.”
Peake also cited playing at King Power Stadium as a big bonus for his youngsters and admits that the 2014/15 campaign has been a highly-enjoyable one to be part of so far.
He added: “It’s terrific (playing at King Power Stadium). Sometimes I think that they get over-excited. You forget how young some of them are. Four or five of them did play in the cup ties that were played here last season, so that experience might have helped them a little bit.
“We can do a bit better than we did (against Wigan) but it is the first time for a few of the lads to play at King Power Stadium. It’s a great honour and it’s a great thing to have at the back of your mind – that you’ve already crossed that off in your career.
“It’s been very pleasing this season. Part of our plan is to progress players through as well, so it’s not just about winning.
“They’ve got a good team spirit and good work ethic and the results have reflected that over the season. We’re behind Chelsea but we’re up there in the league that we’re playing in.”
