Pearson Disappointed With Display

Nigel Pearson voiced his frustration as Leicester City’s FA Cup campaign came to an end thanks to a 2-1 Fifth Round defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
The manager stuck with the same team shape that had served them well against Arsenal in midweek, but despite a positive first half display, the game got away from them in the second half against an energised Villa.

Leandro Bacuna opened the scoring on 68 minutes and substitute Scott Sinclair added a second in the final minute to give them a 2-0 lead, which City couldn’t claw back despite Andrej Kramarić finding the net in stoppage time.

Next up is a trip to Everton next Sunday for the team, but Pearson knows they must rediscover more of the kind of displays that saw them cause the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United so many problems this season.

Speaking to Foxes Player about the match, Pearson reflected: “It’s disappointing and in the second half we didn’t play with the same sort of quality that we did in the first half.

“That’s really disappointing as it’s more or less the same side that we played against Arsenal and yet it probably sums up why we’re having such a frustrating season in as much as we don’t replicate those performances.

“To go out in the fashion that we have done today is not something that I’m particularly happy with.

“We couldn’t get hold of the ball in the second half. It’s always going to be a bit of a risk making a change, but you can’t spend the whole of the game defending. We felt, certainly against Arsenal that we passed the ball well and caused them problems, but when you play like we did in the second half today it makes it difficult to do that, and that’s how it is.”

On the positive side for the Foxes, Matthew Upson came through his second match in a City shirt and looked impressive, while Kramarić’s second goal in as many games with give City added hope heading to Everton.

Pearson added: “Matt Upson, I’m delighted he got through. He showed his experience today, which is important and Andrej’s was a very good finish.

“I’m pleased for him and the most important thing now for us is to make sure that we get ready for the next game.

“Again, the fans get behind the team so well and we’ve not given them the performance that they were looking for, and that’s a big disappointment for sure.”
