Pearson Points To Competitive Spirit

With three consecutive wins on the board, Nigel Pearson has highlighted the contributions of his entire squad to Leicester City’s recent turnaround in Barclays Premier League fortunes.
The injury list has been relatively short for the majority of the season, meaning the competition within the camp has been extremely high, which can be frustrating for players having to wait for their chance.

But the manager was delighted to see contributions from all quarters in a 2-0 victory over Swansea City at the weekend – a performance that ranks as one of City’s finest of the entire season.

Winger Marc Albrighton made just his fourth start of the campaign against the Swans and was many people’s choice for Man-of-the-Match with a brilliant display, while Danny Drinkwater terrorised the opposition defence when he came off the bench with 15 minutes to play.

And for Pearson, they are both fine examples of the ultra-competitive environment at Leicester City. He told Foxes Player: “We talk about it being a squad game and what is important is that players feel that they get a chance.

“Marc [Albrighton] has had a difficult season and has probably felt frustrated at times, but the players playing in wide positions have been exceptionally good all year.

“What he has done is taken his chance once it’s come along. Throughout the side there’s a competitive spirit, but also a lot of support for the players who aren’t playing.

“You look at Danny Drinkwater, he was our Player of the Year last year, and has played quite a small part in terms of appearances this year, but let me tell you, when he got the nod to go on as a second half substitute, he was nothing other than focused on doing a job for the team.

“I think that is again very commendable in terms of how the players view the situation that we’re in and there is a lot of respect for each other. I think that’s very important for us at this stage.”
