Record Breaking Schwarzer

In helping Leicester City progress to the FA Cup Fifth Round on Saturday afternoon with a fine performance, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer became the new holder of two Club records.
The 42-year-old, who signed earlier this month from Chelsea, pulled off a number of fine saves with the Foxes trailing 1-0 to allow them to mount a stunning late comeback.

Goals from Leo Ulloa and Jeff Schlupp in the final minutes at White Hart Lane saw the Foxes progress on what turned out to be an enjoyable afternoon for City’s players and their thousands of fans who made themselves heard at the ground.

Manager Nigel Pearson was thrilled with the contribution of his ‘keeper and former team-mate, telling Foxes Player: “Mark Schwarzer did exactly what we all knew he could do and if anybody had doubts as to whether somebody of his tender age should be still operating, I think his performance would definitely change any doubters’ minds on that.”

And for Schwarzer, who is the most-capped non-British player in Premier League history with 508 appearances, it was a landmark afternoon as he became Leicester City’s oldest-ever player and debutant.

Kevin Phillips was Leicester City’s previous oldest debutant when he came off the bench to help City to victory away at Leeds United last season, but Schwarzer, at the age of 42 years and 110 days takes that crown.

He also replaces fellow goalkeeper Joe Calvert as the Club’s oldest ever player. On the previous holder of the Club’s oldest-player record, Club Historian John Hutchinson recalled: “Joe was a cigarette smoking goalkeeper who played his last game for Leicester City on December 13, 1947 aged 40 years and 313 days.

“Joe had been on Leicester’s books since 1932. In his 15 years at Filbert Street - a career interrupted by the Second World War - Joe played a total of 142 games for the Club.”
