Schmeichel Staying Grounded

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has urged his teammates not to get carried away after his side’s 1-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Burnley on Saturday.
The Foxes recorded their fourth-straight win courtesy of Jamie Vardy’s third goal in his last five appearances, and in turn moved out of the drop zone for the first time this year.

And key to the win was Schmeichel, who pulled several saves right out of the top drawer to register his second clean sheet in as many games.

“It is a big win, of course it is,” said Schmeichel. “But there is still a long way to go yet and we are not getting carried away. We have given ourselves a great chance but we have some very tough games to go still. We are confident but we are by no means safe at all.

“For any team at any point in the season in the Premier League to win four in a row is a great achievement. We are proud of that but that is gone now and we have some massive games ahead of us now.

“There is a lot of football to be played and I know it is a cliché but it is a case of one game at a time.”

Vardy’s match-winning strike came just moments after a brilliant save from the Danish international to deny the lively Danny Ings.

But the rebound fell to Paul Konchesky, who took a heavy touch before bringing down Matthew Taylor in the box – the midfielder stepped up to take the penalty, but rattled the outside of the City post.

“It was strange because I had a feeling he wouldn’t score,” Schmeichel commented on the spot kick “I didn’t have a feeling I would save it. Something just said that to me and when it happened I think that just deflated them.

“We took advantage. I have seen the [Vardy] goal again and it is probably save of the season by Tom Heaton (to prevent Michael Duff’s own goal) but that is the sort of break you need to go for you if you are to stay up.”
