Show Racism The Red Card Support From LCFC Pair

Leicester City duo Wes Morgan and Danny Simpson met with groups of local schoolchildren at King Power Stadium last week to support Show Racism The Red Card.
The charity uses footballers to help educate young people on the dangers of racism and raise awareness of issues currently affecting football and society.

Hosted in the Banks Lounge at King Power Stadium, the afternoon began with an introduction to the charity and provided an answer to the question ‘what is racism?’, before the youngsters got a chance to quiz the City stars.

Wes and Danny were joined by former Leicester City striker Trevor Benjamin in answering questions on a host of topics ranging from their own experiences with racism to their views on current issues in society.

Speaking to Foxes Player, City skipper Morgan said: “It’s very important to convey the right message and get across that we want to say no to racism. It’s unacceptable and we’re trying to make people aware that it’s wrong and to promote a positive message.

“We hope they learn the message that’s trying to be put across to them about what’s tolerated and what’s right or wrong. That’ll be good for them in the future, for football in general and all sport.”

Simpson added: “Events like this let us talk about our experiences and we hope that they come away from us having listened and taken something from it. Hopefully they’ll listen to our experiences and won’t be involved in it in the future.”

Established in 1996, the organisation combats racism through education, and delivers training to more than 50,000 people across Britain every year through films featuring stars such as Ryan Giggs and Thierry Henry.

This direct education through role models is a key part of the charity’s mission to challenge racism across all sports, and Gavin Sutherland from Show Racism The Red Card hopes that encouraging young people to challenge racism can help towards stamping out the problem.

He said: “At Show Racism The Red Card we organise educational events at football clubs around England. We try to work with between 40 and 50 clubs each season where we invite young people from local schools along to hear a unique anti-racist message from footballers.

“We’ve found that the power of role models to talk to young people about racism as an issue has a tremendously positive impact. It’s something that our campaign has been founded on and something that continues to resonate with young people.

“As the sport grows and as it becomes more popular, those role models do have more of an impact on young people when they think about this issue.”
