Danny Simpson can’t wait to take on Newcastle United in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday in what could be his first game at St James’ Park since leaving the club.

The defender spent four years with the Magpies from 2009 to 2013 but despite having plenty of friends in the north-east, he insists he’ll be giving it all he can to secure three points once the whistle goes on Saturday afternoon.

Simpson has enjoyed an excellent spell in the side of late in a run that sees City flying high in third place, however the Magpies have also found form after climbing out of the bottom three with a victory over AFC Bournemouth last time out.

They’ll be keen to build on that with a home victory at St. James’ Park, and Simpson is looking forward to the challenge Steve McClaren’s men will present come 3pm on Saturday.

“It’s the first time I’ve been there since I left so I’m looking forward to it,” Simpson told Foxes Player HD. “I spent four years there so it’s a big chunk of my career when I was growing up and learning the game so I’m looking forward to going back.

“I still know some of the faces there so I’m looking forward to it and if we can get the three points that would make it even better.”

And while Simpson acknowledges that he still has friends at the club, he says that will go out of the window on match day.

“I spoke to [Gabriel] Obertan the other day and I also spoke to Tim Krul because I wanted a car park pass! I spoke to him to see how him and his family were, so I’ve spoken to a few of the lads and it was all friendly, but come Saturday [it’ll be like] I don’t know them – it’s all business.”

The Foxes certainly have plenty of attacking weapons at their disposal but so do Newcastle, and Simpson is confident that the City defence will be prepared for all eventualities.

He added: “They’ve got some good strong runners like [Georginio] Wijnaldum and [Moussa] Sissoko then you’ve got a few other lads that can come in that are a little more lightweight but very tricky.

“Whoever plays on the flanks, your game will change defensively depending on who it is, so we’ll have to watch that. I think they like to use Sissoko and Wijnaldum to break but we can use that to our advantage because we can hit them going the other way.

“We’ll have a chat with the manager in the next couple of days and we’ll see what we’re going to do.”

As always, Simpson and the rest of the team will have the backing of the Blue Army, who are this weekend being treated to a free breakfast courtesy of the Club ahead of the Newcastle clash.

He said: “They travel everywhere for us and they’ve been fantastic. My friends say they can’t wait to go to the games in the Leicester end because they love the atmosphere.

“It’s a nice thing to do (the free breakfast) and I’m sure they’ll enjoy their cobs before a nice trip up.”
