Smith’s Penalty Shoot-Out Delight

After saving two spot-kicks in a Premier League International Cup Quarter-Final penalty shoot-out against Everton, goalkeeper Adam Smith believes his side’s resilience was key to the victory.

The visitors took an early lead on Thursday at Belvoir Drive through striker Chris Long, but in-form forward Harry Panayiotou equalised just 10 minutes later.
Finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes, Panayiotou added another four minutes into extra-time before substitute Harry Charsley made it 2-2, forcing the tie to penalties.
Everton edged in front after City forward Simonas Stankevicius missed from 12 yards, but Smith produced two excellent stops to ultimately win it for Steve Beaglehole’s outfit 4-3 on penalties.
Speaking after the victory, Smith told Foxes Player: “It’s a great feeling. We got past a tough game against Everton. They’re a strong side. They got the better of us at times, especially towards the end of the game, but we got through, which is the main thing.
“It was a bit of a blow when Everton scored after Harry’s second goal, but the boys dug in and got through. We’ve done what we had to do. It was a good performance and we’re all pleased that we’re through to the next round.
“Saving penalties is pot luck, really. Go one way and it might go in, or you might save it, but luckily enough, I went the right way twice.”
Smith also had some kind words for March’s Barclays U21 Premier League Player of the Month Panayiotou, who has now scored eight goals in his last eight games in all competitions.
“Harry’s a great striker,” Smith added “He’s a goalscorer and he gets himself in those positions and scores good goals.”
City are now through to the semi-finals of the competition, but first face Manchester United in the U21 Premier League at King Power Stadium on Monday evening (7pm kick-off).
The Foxes have won five of their last six league fixtures and know three points against the Red Devils could move them top of the table.
