Top 10: Games Of The Season

With the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League season done and dusted, LCFC.com takes a look back at its top 10 Leicester City matches of the campaign.
Check out the list below as we count down the top 10 Premier League games and let us know if you agree…

10 | Everton 2-2 Leicester City

A game that ended a run of four straight defeats, but one where the Foxes could easily have taken all three points from but for a bit of luck to back up a spirited performance at Goodison Park.

Fighting to claw back the five-point gap to safety, City scored twice in six minutes to take the lead through David Nugent and Esteban Cambiasso after Steven Naismith had put Everton ahead.

However with just two minutes left, the ball cannoned off an unfortunate Matthew Upson to deny City a deserved win.

9 | Hull City 0-1 Leicester City

Leicester City’s 19th game of the season – the halfway point – and on the back of a run of 13 matches without a victory, it was a must-win for Nigel Pearson’s side.

Going into the match the Foxes were bottom of the table on 10 points, with Hull sitting 17th, six points above them and hoping to pull nine clear.

As the match panned out, it certainly wasn’t a classic, but a victory for City thanks to a solitary Riyad Mahrez goal in the first half pulled them to within three of safety – making it one of the most vital moments of the entire campaign.

8 | Liverpool 2-2 Leicester City

The New Year’s Day tie with Liverpool was certainly full of drama and for the Foxes, was somewhat typical of many of their matches this season – an excellent performance that left them unlucky not to come away with three points.

City were made to dig deep by Liverpool, who went 2-0 up at half-time thanks to two Steven Gerrard penalties – both given for hotly disputed handball decisions.

However after the break, stunning strikes from David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp earned their team a point.

7 | Leicester City 2-0 Swansea City

After back-to-back wins over West Ham and West Brom, the Foxes were finally getting a taste of the momentum they’d been craving for so much of the season against a highly talented Swansea City outfit in a raucous King Power Stadium.

Leo Ulloa and Andy King scored in either half to secure the win, which finally relieved them of the ‘bottom club’ tag for the first time since November.

It’s a match that will go down as one of the most complete displays of the season from City against one of the league’s best footballing sides.

6 | Leicester City 2-1 West Ham United

The match that started the run. The run that secured survival. It all begins with West Ham at home, when the Foxes were seven points from safety and in danger of being cast 10 adrift with a defeat and a win for Sunderland.

However, an Esteban Cambiasso goal sparked an incredible display full of both quality and heart from Leicester, who despite conceding an equaliser, kept pressing and got a fully deserved winner through Andy King with just minutes remaining.

5 | Burnley 0-1 Leicester City

In a match of vast importance to both sides and at a stage in the season where there was little margin for error, the Foxes prevailed to lift themselves out of the relegation zone for the first time since October thanks to a dramatic winner.

After a scrappy opening, the hosts won a penalty, which was missed by Matty Taylor and in a dramatic twist, Jamie Vardy scored at the other end less than a minute later. That made it four wins in-a-row for City and effectively ended Burnley’s survival bid.

4 | Leicester City 3-0 Newcastle United

After 27 games of the season, Newcastle United were flying high with 35 points, while the Foxes were a long way back on just 18.

But when John Carver’s men arrived at King Power Stadium seven games later, a resurgent Foxes had narrowed that gap to just one point.

A win for Newcastle would have seen them safe and pushed City even closer to relegation, but Nigel Pearson’s side pulled out one of their most emphatic home performances in recent memory to win.

A double from Leo Ulloa and a Wes Morgan goal did the damage as a rattled Magpies finished with nine men.

3 | West Bromwich Albion 2-3 Leicester City

This was a match that produced what Esteban Cambiasso described as his favourite moment of the entire season, and one that City fans will surely remember for a long time.

After an out of sorts first half, City went 2-1 down but pulled things level after the break through a Robert Huth goal.

Things looked to be drifting towards a draw but in stoppage time, Jamie Vardy won the ball on half way, knocked it past Joleon Lescott and hit a sweet left foot finish across the ‘keeper and into the bottom corner.

It was a vital three points and a moment of pure joy for the fans behind the goal.

2 | Leicester City 5-1 Queens Park Rangers

Not a game of any significance in the table, with QPR already relegated and City already safe, but it was the perfect way to round off the season at the same time as providing hope for the next.

England’s Jamie Vardy opened the scored, Marc Albrighton thumped in a second, Leo Ulloa added a third, Esteban Cambiasso gracefully made it four before Andrej Kramaric put the icing on the cake with a fifth.

But more than anything else, it was a thank you from the players to the fans for helping lift them during their darkest hours this season.

1 | Leicester City 5-3 Manchester United

Beating Manchester United is a daunting task for any team, but as far as coming back from two goals down against them to win, well, it had never been done in the Premier League. That’s what makes it all that more memorable.

United stars Robin Van Persie and Angel Di Maria had put the visitors 2-0 up at King Power Stadium before Leo Ulloa managed to claw a goal back.

But when Ander Herrera made it 3-1 to United on the hour mark, things looked bleak for the Foxes.

However, in a 20-minute spell the likes of which the stadium had never seen, City scored four times – through David Nugent, Esteban Camibasso, Jamie Vardy and Leo Ulloa – to stun Louis Van Gaal’s men and make headlines around the globe.

It was a match that will surely go down as the greatest ever on Filbert Way and ranks alongside some of the greatest performances ever in the Club’s long history.
