Top 10: Leicester City Scorers Since 2000

LCFC.com counts down Leicester City's top 10 scorers since 1 January, 2000. How many can you name?
=9. Paul Gallagher (2009-2015) – 28 goals (137 apps)

Two seasons of reaching double figures for the Foxes from midfield have Paul Gallagher level with Scowcroft in this list. He carved out a reputation as a scorer of spectacular goals before spending two seasons on loan with Preston North End.

=9. James Scowcroft (2001-2005) – 28 (147 apps)

After joining from Ipswich Town in 2001, Scowcroft proved to be a reliable source of goals for the Foxes both as a striker and out on the right hand side. The most productive of his four seasons for City was in 2002/03, when 10 goals helped the Foxes to promotion from the Championship.

8. Steve Howard (2008-2012) - 32 goals (169 apps)

Signed in 2008 from Derby County, Steve Howard’s presence in attack made him a real handful for opposition defences. His last minute winner against Leeds United in 2009 went a long way towards securing promotion to the Championship. His efforts during that season earned him the Club’s Player of the Year Award.

7. Iain Hume (2005-2008) – 34 goals (132 apps)

A Canadian international signed from Tranmere Rovers in 2005, Iain Hume’s energetic performances across three difficult seasons for the Foxes made him a popular figure with supporters.

6. Lloyd Dyer (2008-2014) – 39 goals (265 apps)

A popular figure among fans due to his direct and exciting playing style, Lloyd Dyer was a key member of both Nigel Pearson’s League 1 and Championship winning teams.

5. Paul Dickov (2002-2004 & 2008-2010) – 40 goals (125 apps)

The Scottish striker had two spells at Leicester City that saw him play at both Filbert Street and King Power Stadium, with half of his 40 goals coming in the 2002/03-promotion season.

A tenacious and talented forward, Dickov joined the City ranks in 2001 following a five-year spell with Manchester City. He scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rover to open his City account, but couldn’t prevent the Foxes being relegated.

A brilliant 20 goals alongside Brian Deane in 2002/03 saw City return to the Premier League as Championship runners-up behind Portsmouth.

A further 13 goals would follow in that top-flight campaign, including two in a famous 4-0 win over Leeds United. The Foxes were relegated again that season, seeing Dickov move to Blackburn Rovers.

After further spells with Manchester City and Crystal Palace, Nigel Pearson signed the striker for City once again in 2008. He scored three times that season to help City lift the League 1 title and became the first player to score in the top three tiers of English football for the Club. Andy King has since done the same.

Dickov went on to join Derby County the following season.

4. Jamie Vardy (2012-present) – 50 goals (144 apps)

Since a move from then non-league Fleetwood Town in 2012, Jamie Vardy’s rise has seen him score goals at both Championship and Premier League level – form that eventually saw him land a spot in Roy Hodgson’s squad for Euro 2016 in France.

After a season of settling in, Vardy hit the ground running in the 2013/14 campaign alongside David Nugent – scoring 16 goals en route to the Championship title.

Vardy showed flashes of his brilliant best during the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, including a brilliant display in a 5-3 win over Manchester United and a crucial stoppage time winner against West Bromwich Albion to kick-start the survival bid.

However it was in 2015/16 that the world came to know the name of Jamie Vardy. He scored on the opening day against Sunderland before going on to score in a Premier League-record 11 consecutive fixtures.

In total, the striker found the net 24 times during the 2015/16 campaign and scooped the Football Writers’ Player of the Season Award as recognition of the key role he played in Leicester City’s Premier League title victory.

=2. David Nugent (2011-2015) – 59 goals (180 apps)

In four seasons with the Foxes, Nugent tasted the highs of promotion and the lows of a play-off defeat, but his performances remained of a consistently high standard, even when playing in an advanced midfield role.

After arriving from Portsmouth on a free transfer in 2011, Nugent enjoyed an impressive first season that saw him finish as top scorer with 16 goals.

His strike against Norwich City at Carrow Road put the Foxes into the quarter-finals. He added another 16 goals to his tally in 2012/13, including a first career hat-trick against Hull City at King Power Stadium, before having the most productive season of his career in 2013/14.

Alongside Jamie Vardy, the exciting duo gave defences a torrid time en route to the Championship title, with Nugent, now on penalty taking duties for City, scoring 20 league goals for the first time in his career.

His first Premier League goal for City came against Manchester United in a 5-3 win last season, while his stunning volley against Liverpool on New Year’s Day 2015 won the Goal of the Year Award at that year’s Season Awards. He moved to Middlesbrough in 2015.

=2. Andy King (2007-present) – 59 goals (331 apps)

A graduate of Leicester City’s Academy, Andy King will go down as one of Leicester City’s finest midfielders of recent times and with 59 goals in his career so far, few can argue.

The Wales international now stands above the legendary Davie Gibson as the Club’s top-scoring midfielder of all time, and is the only current member of the squad to be involved in all three title-winning seasons (2008/09, 2013/14 and 2015/16).

After a debut against Wolves in October 2007, King’s first goal soon followed – a stunning 30-yard strike against Southampton that would be the first of many special ones in a blue shirt.

From 2008/09 King reached double figures for three straight seasons, including an incredible 16 goals in 2010/11 as he built a reputation as one of the finest midfielders in the Football League.

Following promotion to the Premier League, King scored his first top-flight goal in a late 2-1 win over West Ham United and he will have scored few more crucial, as it sparked the run of form that eventually saved City from relegation.

In 2015/16 he added another three goals against West Ham, West Brom and Everton as he became the first player in the Premier League era to win the top three divisions with one team.

1. Matty Fryatt (2006-2011) - 62 goals (189 apps)

Leading the list of Leicester City’s goal scorers in the 21st century is former striker Matty Fryatt, who scored 62 times in 189 appearances for Leicester City over a period of five years.

Now with Nottingham Forest, Fryatt signed for City from Walsall in 2006 at the age of just 19. It was Craig Levein that brought the England Under-19s international in, but it was under Rob Kelly that the striker’s goals helped the Foxes to avoid relegation.

Those first three seasons, including City’s fastest-ever goal after just nine seconds against Preston North End, saw Fryatt net 13 times in 88 appearances, but under Nigel Pearson in 2008/09, Foxes fans began to see the best of him.

The Nuneaton-born striker scored 32 times for the Foxes en route to the League 1 title, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Dagenham & Redbridge and Southend to take him to 20 goals by Christmas.

Fryatt scored a further 13 goals for the Foxes in the Championship the following season, including one in the Championship Play-Off Semi-Final defeat to Cardiff City.

His last goals for Leicester came in 4-3 defeat to Norwich City in which he was sent off, before a switch to Hull City in December 2010.
