Jamie Vardy’s homework paid dividends on Saturday afternoon after the striker’s 10th goal of the season helped Leicester City to a Barclays Premier Leauge victory over Crystal Palace.
The England man’s delightful dink over Palace ‘keeper Wayne Hennessey sent Foxes fans into raptures midway through the second half, and afterwards he admitted to taking inspiration from West Ham United midfielder Dimitri Payet.
France international Payet found the net with an exquisite chip over the Palace ‘keeper in West Ham’s 3-1 victory over the Eagles last weekend, and Vardy revealed that was in his mind after Riyad Mahrez put him one-on-one with Hennessey at King Power Stadium.
The goal marked the seventh consecutive match in which Vardy has found the back of the net, making him the first Leicester City player to do so in the top-flight and underlining the importance of preparation at the highest level.
“Obviously we pressed, they’ve missed the clearance, it’s gone straight to Riyad who found me first time and I’ve slotted it straight in,” Vardy told Foxes Player HD.

“I think, to be honest with you, it was one of the only opportunities I’ve had in the game to get behind them so it’s brilliant to get 10 for the season but the three points are a lot more important.
“I saw what Payet did to them last week when they played. Obviously he’s feigned to shoot and the ‘keeper has gone down, so I was hoping he’d do exactly the same and he did.
“I just followed it in to make sure it went into the back of the net otherwise their centre half might have got to it.
“I’m delighted to get the record but it’s onto the next one now and hopefully I can beat it again.”
It was a tight game, but the willingness of the Foxes to give everything for the cause ultimately saw them force the error that led to the goal as well as seeing out a brilliant first clean sheet of the campaign.
The victory moved City 13 points clear of the relegation zone, which is a million miles from the position they found themselves in at this stage last season – 10 points to be exact.
Vardy added: “Obviously from last season there aren’t really many changes and we’ve got the year’s experience from last year as well.
“We’ve got a good set of lads who will definitely put their bodies on the line for each other and the competition for places is well up there as well. There’s no weak link, that’s what it should be and I think we’re solid as a team.”
The Foxes certainly put that experience to use against the Eagles, who pressed for the equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to break the will of Claudio Ranieri’s men.
Vardy said: “I think we sat off them a bit to be honest in the first half. We obviously invited the pressure and I think that’s why we went in 0-0. It could have been 1-0 either way.
“We’ve come out in the second half and swapped Jeff [Schlupp] and Riyad [Mahrez] around and we’ve started to press with the pace that Jeff and I have. The rest of the team can back us up then and it’s worked in our favour. We’ve got the goal and defended brilliantly to get the three points.”
