U18s Report: Leicester City 1 West Bromwich Albion 2

Leicester City’s Under-18s suffered a late 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in the Barclays U18 Premier League at Belvoir Drive on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes when a loose ball was tapped in from close-range by Baggies defender Daniel Barbir.
But City responded in the second half and when Danny Rowe was fouled in the area, he kept his composure to fire his side level from the spot on 67 minutes.
As the game looked to be heading for a draw, West Brom struck a late winner. Andre Wright's goal-bound shot couldn't be cleared by Hamza Choudhury on the line, and the ball found the back of the net.
The young Foxes had already beaten the Baggies earlier in the season when goals from Keenan King and Cedric Kipre helped them come from a goal down to win 2-1 in late September.
Battling against the blustery conditions, it was the visitors that threatened first. Tahvon Campbell latched onto a through-ball and cut inside from the left, only for Max Smith-Varnham to rush off his line and block the No.9’s shot on 11 minutes.
Brandon Fox wriggled through the West Brom back line six minutes later, but couldn’t find a man as Ethan Ross picked the attacker’s cross out of the air.
Smith-Varnham then pulled off a remarkable point-blank save on 19 minutes. Wright found space in the box and fired a low shot that came off the City upright and fell to James Smith, who saw his effort blocked by the Foxes’ No.1 before Leicester cleared their lines.
West Brom continued their push for the opener and found it with 25 minutes on the clock. Smith-Varnham could only parry Jack Hallahan’s free-kick into the path of centre-half Barbir, who poked in from six yards.
Fox tried to find an equaliser just before the break as he hit one from 25-yards, only to see his low drive collected comfortably by shot-stopper Ross as West Brom went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
City came out fighting in the second period. A neat ball over the top of the opposition defence from Kyle Bailey found King, who was brought down on the edge of the box. Rowe stepped up to take the free-kick and forced a good save out of Ross.
Kipre then pinched the ball off the West Brom defence and fired at Ross before King’s shot was turned wide as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
Rowe, who threatened all game, then picked up the ball on the left wing and slipped past Josh Ezewele. After dribbling into the box, the No.10 was brought down. Rowe stepped up to take the spot-kick with confidence and sent Ross the wrong way, levelling it up at 1-1 with 67 minutes gone.
Chances for Leicester to take the lead came thick and fast as Fox and Choudhury both had efforts saved by West Brom’s No.1.
The visitors then had two goals disallowed for offside in quick succession as City rode their luck before Rowe’s shot from the edge of the area failed to test Ross.
While City looked for a winner at one end, it was West Brom who went on to score the decisive goal. A scramble in the box saw Wright's effort head towards goal, and Choudhury’s goal-line clearance couldn't prevent them from scoring as the ball hit the back of the net.
The moment of misfortune came on 90 minutes, and despite mounting several late attacks, Leicester couldn’t find a second goal.
City now turn their attentions to the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round when they host Chesterfield at King Power Stadium on Monday 19 January before a league clash with Reading five days later.
