U18s Report: Leicester City 1 Wigan Athletic 0

Leicester City’s Under-18s advanced to the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup after beating Wigan Athletic 1-0 at King Power Stadium on Wednesday evening.

A first half own goal from Sean Harrison proved to be the difference on the night as the youngsters recorded their fifth win in six games in all competitions.
The visitors mustered up the first opportunity of the game when captain Louis Robles headed just wide from Joshua Gregory’s free kick on five minutes.
At the other end, Matty Miles swung in a free kick that just evaded Elliott Moore at the back post – Owen Evans collecting calmly on the quarter-hour mark.
Max Smith-Varnham, who has been in fine form for the young Foxes so far this season, then tipped a 25-yard free kick from Sam Cosgrove just wide on 26 minutes.
Keenan King did well to latch onto a through-ball a minute later. The striker eventually had his one-on-one saved by the legs of Evans as City pushed for the opening goal, and Kyle Bailey couldn’t turn in the rebound.
Leicester broke the deadlock seven minutes before half-time. Cedric Kipre floated a long ball over the top of the Wigan defence which Harrison headed into the back of his own net.
Brandon Fox looked to double his side’s lead on 43 minutes, dragging his low left-footed shot wide of the mark – 1-0 to City at the break.
Moore was on hand again four minutes into the second half, heading clear a good cross to prevent Robles from nodding in an equaliser.
King then had a close-range effort stopped by Evans at the other end – the Wigan No.1 throwing himself in the way of the striker’s low drive with 52 minutes gone.
Smith-Varnham then collected Robles’ long-range strike just after the hour mark before gathering a 40-yard volley from Arnold Baxendale as the visitors pushed for a levelling goal.
King then received the ball from Fox on the wing before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful drive at Evans, who saved on 71 minutes.
Bailey did well on 75 minutes, working the right wing well before teeing up Fox, whose shot was blocked by Harrison deep in the opposition penalty box.
Wigan pressed for a goal in the late stages and came close to scoring when Smith-Varnham saved Cosgrove's free kick in injury time, but City stood strong and defended resiliently to see out the win.
The young Foxes will play Chesterfield in the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup in January, but first face Southampton in the Barclays U18 Premier League at Belvoir Drive on Saturday.
