Leicester City’s Development Squad were edged out 1-0 by Norwich City in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Monday afternoon at Belvoir Drive.

The Foxes had a number of chances to take the lead, with Gökhan Inler – one of four first teamers to play 90 minutes alongside Daniel Amartey, Demarai Gray and Liam Moore – going closest in the first period.

It was Gray who then threatened after the break, striking the post after a positive run, as the Foxes looked good value to take the lead.

But with just six minutes to play, Norwich scored the winner as midfielder Ray Grant’s free kick from the right avoided everyone and found the back of the net.

After an even opening period, Norwich shot-stopper Ben Killip pulled off fine save to deny Inler from distance on 18 minutes.

It then took an excellent stop from Daniel Iversen to prevent the Canaries taking the lead at the other end, as the Denmark Under-19s stopper denied Glenn Middleton from close range 10 minutes later.

Gray then flashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the box off target, while Liam Moore was unfortunate not to put his side in front as he sent an effort wide under pressure.

Winger Gray came just inches away from making it 1-0 10 minutes into the second period, firing a low drive onto the post that had Killip beaten.

City maintained their attacking intent and only a good block prevented substitute Layton Ndukwu from converting from a tight angle on the hour mark.

Liam Moore was a constant threat from set plays as he saw his close-range strike from a corner cleared off the line with 63 minutes gone.

Norwich raced up the other end and had an opportunity of their own to break the deadlock, but Iversen stood strong to turn away Louis McIntosh’s deflected shot.

Both sides traded blows as Liam Moore nodded over Gray’s corner at the back post on 71 minutes, while Elliott Moore put in a fine block to deny Middleton eight minutes later.

But despite the better chances falling to the Foxes, it was Norwich who eventually found a winning goal, as Grant’s free kick flew in to make it 1-0.

Substitute Harvey Barnes had an immediate opportunity to draw level, but the talented midfielder couldn’t find the target with a volley from inside the box.

City play their penultimate U21 Premier League fixture against Chelsea, who come to King Power Stadium on Monday 18 April (7pm kick-off).
