Leicester City’s Development Squad earned a deserved Barclays U21 Premier League victory over Manchester City at King Power Stadium on Monday evening.

The Foxes dominated proceedings throughout as Joe Dodoo’s first-half strike saw the Development Squad record their first league win since November.

City were boosted by the involvement of five first teamers, with Daniel Amartey, Gökhan Inler, Leonardo Ulloa and Liam Moore all completing a full game, while Demarai Gray notched up just over 70 minutes having come on as a substitute for the first team against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Foxes controlled the game in the opening 10 minutes, but it was Man City who first went closest through Brandon Barker, who dragged a shot across the face of goal early on.

City eventually took advantage of their good spell of pressure, and it was Dodoo who found the back of the net for his side as the winger side-footed in Gray’s excellent cross to make it 1-0 on 14 minutes.

And Gray was unlucky not to make it 2-0 a minute later as the former Birmingham City wideman won the ball and drifted inside before forcing Angus Gunn into a good low stop.

Steve Beaglehole’s outfit then had two more opportunities, with Ulloa seeing his shot blocked, before Dodoo fired wide from a difficult angle.

Man City looked for a reply and it took a fine stop from Daniel Iversen, who made his King Power Stadium debut for the Development Squad, at the front post to deny Isaac Buckley-Ricketts on 23 minutes.

Left back Ben Chilwell then sent an effort wide under pressure, before Ulloa nodded off target as City continued to threaten.

Man City applied some pressure early on in the second period, but Iversen was on hand again to make another fine stop, this time denying David Faupala, before Chilwell hooked the loose ball away.

Iversen then did well to parry over Barker’s powerful drive just before the hour mark, while Muskwe nodded off target three minutes later as the Foxes continued their search for a second goal.

Ulloa came agonisingly close to finding the back of the net shortly after as Gunn produced a superb close-range save before the loose ball was cleared to safety.

Chances came few and far between in the late stages. Man City right back James Horsefield had perhaps the best opportunity to haul his side level, but hammered a half-volley over with four minutes to play.

It proved to be a disciplined performance from the Foxes, who not only went forward well, but defended excellently to earn their first clean sheet of the season.
