U21s Report: Leicester City 3 Liverpool 1

A double from Joe Dodoo helped Leicester City’s Development Squad to a deserved victory over Liverpool at King Power Stadium on Monday evening.

The winger fired City into an early lead before Tom Lawrence curled in a superb effort to double the Foxes’ advantage just before the break.
Liverpool forward Harry Wilson scored from the spot after half-time, but Dodoo grabbed his second of the game to secure three points for the men in blue.
There were a number of first-teamers involved, with Ben Hamer, Liam Moore, Danny Drinkwater and Lawrence all notching up some valuable game time.
Steve Beaglehole’s outfit had been in superb form heading into the tie, registering just one defeat in their last nine games in all competitions.
It was a clash that plenty riding on it. City sat five points behind league-leaders Manchester United, Liverpool just four points, meaning both sides could potentially mount a late title charge.
The first chance of the game went to the visitors as Wilson flew down the left flank before setting up Ryan Kent, who fired wide from eight yards.
Sergi Canos then wriggled through the City midfield, only for Moore to put in a fine last-ditch challenge to prevent the Spanish forward from testing Ben Hamer.
Louis Rowley mustered up the Foxes’ first opportunity of the game on 17 minutes. The midfielder, operating at left-back in this fixture, saw his sweet half-volley blocked by Canos.
After a neat exchange of passes, Leicester took the lead. Jack Barmby slid the ball to Dodoo, who side-footed in a deflected shot to put his side 1-0 up.
Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux then denied March's U21 Premier League Player of the Month Harry Panayiotou from six yards before tipping Drinkwater’s low drive behind as City started to stretch their Merseyside opponents.
Shortly after, Dodoo tested Vigouroux with a powerful strike before Drinkwater hammered an effort wide of the target just after the half-hour mark.
City capitalised on their possession and doubled their lead with just two minutes of the second half to play. Rowley won the ball high up the pitch and played in Lawrence, who curled in from the edge of the box – 2-0 to the Foxes at the break.
Liverpool pulled one back just four minutes into the second period. Jak McCourt brought down Wilson in the box and the winger beat Hamer from the spot.
Efforts from Barmby and Panayiotou tested Vigouroux from distance, while at the other end, Jerome Sinclair fired inches wide of Hamer’s upright.
Substitute Marc Pelosi next went close to making in 2-2, but after springing City’s offside trap, the forward fired wide of the mark while one-on-one with Hamer.
Liverpool couldn’t take their chances and City restored their two-goal advantage with 18 minutes to play. A lethal counter-attack saw Drinkwater play the ball to Dodoo, who fired in to make it three goals in his last two appearances.
Substitute Simonas Stankevicius could have made it four in injury-time, but couldn’t beat Vigouroux, who tipped the Lithuanian international’s effort over the bar.
City now turn their attentions to their Premier League International Cup Quarter-Final tie with Everton at Belvoir Drive on Thursday (2pm kick-off).
