Leicester City’s Development Squad were beaten for only the second time this Barclays U21 Premier League season as Southampton recorded a victory at Staplewood Training Ground on Monday evening.

Steve Beaglehole’s side hadn’t played since 24 August, when they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Everton at King Power Stadium thanks to Callum Elder’s late strike.

The Foxes headed to the south coast in search of their first win of the campaign and started well, as England Under-17s international Layton Ndukwu slotted in from Jack Barmby’s pass on 25 minutes to give his side a deserved lead.

The Saints rallied and found an equalising goal shortly before the break as Sam McQueen converted Lloyd Isgrove’s cross to make it 1-1 on 37 minutes.

Early in the second half, midfielder Michael Cain saw his free kick saved by Southampton shot-stopper Harry Isted, before the follow up was deflected wide.

But it was the hosts who would next score as substitute Ryan Seager, who plundered 21 goals in all competitions last campaign, pounced on Maddison’s parry from Bevis Mugabi’s effort to make it 2-1 to the home side just after the hour mark.

Leicester looked for a levelling goal, but Seager grabbed his second of the game with 11 minutes to play. The striker first hit the post before converting the rebound to extend his side’s advantage to two goals.

Maddison was on hand to deny both Isgrove and Seager moments later, and while City went in search of another goal that would make for a tense final few minutes, they couldn’t break down a disciplined Southampton defence for a second time.

The Foxes play their second of three consecutive away U21 Premier League fixtures on Monday 21 September (1pm kick-off) when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
