Leicester City’s Development Squad recorded a deserved victory over Barclays U21 Premier League leaders Sunderland at Eppleton CW on Monday evening.

The Foxes secured the win thanks to a late penalty from Jacob Blyth, who beat James Talbot from the spot to help City record a second consecutive U21 Premier League win, having beaten Manchester City 1-0 last time out.

Both sides had chances to take the lead in the first period, with Rees Greenwood and Emmanuel Eboue both going close, while Blyth also fired just off target at the other end.

But it was City who would go on to earn all three points as midfielder Harvey Barnes, who scored a hat-trick for the Club’s Under-18s in the 7-2 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, was hauled down in the Sunderland box, before Blyth converted from 12 yards with 14 minutes to play.

Speaking to LCFC.com after the game, Development Squad manager Steve Beaglehole said: “It was reminiscent of so many of our first team victories away from home. We defended superbly and it was a real team effort.

“We didn’t look like we were going to concede. We were solid at the back. We got a penalty following some good play from Harvey Barnes. He made his Under-21s debut and he’s a player that we’ve always wanted to move up.

“We didn’t want to rush him into Under-21s group, but it was great opportunity to take him last night. He made big impact in the game.

“His first two or three touches on the ball got him in between two defenders and he won the penalty, which Jacob Blyth finished clinically.

“It gives us a great lift now. We’ve got seven games to go, with five at home. We were very pleased because it just showed how good we can be when we pull together.”
