Leonardo Ulloa was full of confidence after crowning a fine display against Newcastle United with a first Barclays Premier League goal of the season on Saturday afternoon.

The Argentine hitman was the Foxes’ top scorer last term but has had to wait for his opportunities at times this season. That didn’t stop him from taking his chance though, as he powered in a second half header to put Leicester 2-0 up at St. James’ Park.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with his 13th goal of the campaign in as many games while Shinji Okazaki grabbed a third goal late on to seal a 3-0 victory that sent the Foxes to the top of the Premier League table.

Ulloa played from the start and put in a fantastic performance – even grabbing an assist for Vardy’s record-equalling goal. Afterwards, he admitted that he was delighted with his afternoon’s work.

“I am very happy,” he told . “It was a very good performance by the team. I am happy for Vardy because he has equalled the record now.

“The team played well and I was able to score the goal and we won the game. Everything is very good for Leicester and that is important.”

The record Ulloa spoke of was Vardy’s incredible feat of scoring in 10 consecutive Premier League games. It’s a mark equalled only by former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the Premier League era.

“It is so difficult to score ten goals in consecutive games,” he said. “It is very important for him and for us as well. He has so much motivation and confidence. He puts in a very good performance every game. We need him and we need to play with and for him.”

Playing in a top-of-the-table team will give any player confidence but Ulloa admitted that it was important for him to find the back of the net against the Magpies – his first strike of the campaign.

He added: “It gives me more confidence now. Always I am looking for the chance to play and I got the chance. I could score the goal and that gives me more confidence.

“I have to keep training the same and I hope I continue to get the opportunity to play. My mentality and the group mentality is very strong, very good.”
