Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy was handed a special honour at the 2016 Professional Footballers Association Awards in recognition of his record-breaking scoring streak.

The 29-year-old became the first player in Premier League history to score in 11 consecutive matches earlier this season, eclipsing the previous record of 10 held by ex-Manchester United forward Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

It was a streak that began with an emphatic penalty against AFC Bournemouth before being completed with a brilliant strike in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in November last year.

Speaking to , Vardy said: “I’m over the moon. It’s an honour to get an award like this and I’m ecstatic but I wouldn’t have been able to do it if it wasn’t for the team.

“You try not to think about it (the record). You just hope that a chance or two will come your way. Luckily the first chance I got [against Manchester United] I managed to put away and broke the record.”

The honour adds to what has been a wonderful season so far for the former Fleetwood Town striker, who has scored 22 Premier League goals to help fire the Foxes to the top of the Premier League table with just three games remaining.

Vardy was also nominated alongside N’Golo Kanté and Riyad Mahrez for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, with – the first time any Leicester City player has done so.
