Jamie Vardy spoke with pride after being handed a second call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad ahead of the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The former Fleetwood Town man won his first Three Lions cap this past summer when he came off the bench during a 0-0 friendly draw with the Republic of Ireland and has continued to hit top form this season.

The 28-year-old took his scoring tally in the Barclays Premier League this season to two with a well-taken penalty against AFC Bournemouth at the weekend – helping Leicester City maintain an unbeaten start in the process.

Now that form has been rewarded with an England call, with Vardy taking his place in the squad for qualifiers against both San Marino and Switzerland over the international break.

“It’s brilliant,” said Vardy on his selection. “When I got the call-up last time I got the feel for it and I wanted to be involved again. I’ve just heard now that I’m definitely going [again].

“At the end of the day I know it’s all down to me [to work hard] and I know I’m the one that’s got to keep the form going. I need to chip in with a few more goals, and if that is what is going to keep happening all season, I’m very happy.

“Hopefully it’ll keep happening all the way and you never know, I could be at the Euros at the end of the season.

“It’d mean everything to me to be honest. Everyone knows where I’ve come from and the way I’ve had to come back into the professional game, so it’d be a dream come true.”

Hodgson’s side have a perfect record from their six qualifying games so far and will seal their place in Euro 2016 with two more victories.

They first travel to Serravalle to face San Marino on Saturday 5 September before returning to Wembley to face Switzerland on Tuesday 8 September.

However Vardy is fully aware that his place in the England squad is down to the hard work and dedication he has displayed at Club level with Leicester City. The Foxes picked him up from Fleetwood Town in 2012 and he has continued to improve season-after-season since.

“At the end of the day I play for Leicester City,” added Vardy. “That’s my Club and England is a bonus - if you’re on form you’re going to get called up for your country.

“But the main thing is obviously putting the performances in for Leicester, helping the Club get points to take them to where they want to be, which is obviously improving on last year. We don’t want to be in that relegation scrap again. Anything I can do to help that, then happy days.”
