Jamie Vardy became the first Leicester City player to score for England in a major tournament as he helped the Three Lions come from behind to beat Wales in Group B.

After Gareth Bale’s stunning long range free kick had given Wales a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute, England boss Roy Hodgson called for both Vardy and Daniel Sturridge from the bench at half time.

It proved to be an inspired move as the Leicester City man rattled the ball home from close range just 10 minutes after coming on – finding himself in the right place at the right time to make the most of a deflection off Ashley Williams.

That made it 1-1 and Wales did well to keep England at bay as the game wore on, until fellow substitute Sturridge struck a dramatic winner inside stoppage time. Again Vardy was involved as he gave the ball to Delle Alli in the box, who then fed Sturridge for a clever touch and finish through a crowd of bodies.

The 2-1 victory moves England into first place in Group B after two games, with just one more fixture to play against Slovakia, against who they need just a draw to guarantee a spot in the knockout phase.

Wales meanwhile, who are now second in Group B, face Russia in their final group game, where they will need a victory to be absolutely sure of a passage into the knockout round.

Andy King was again an unused substitute for the Welsh, but he will hope to be involved against Russia, which takes place at 8pm on Monday 20 June, the same time as England face Slovakia.
