Leicester City captain Wes Morgan re-joined the first team squad on Tuesday, as the Barclays Premier League countdown continues at pace.
A little over a week after concluding his CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with Jamaica, the Foxes skipper was back at Belvoir Drive for his first training session under new Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri.
Unsurprisingly for a player that has been involved in both the Gold Cup and Copa America since last season finished, Wes looked in great shape as he linked up with his City teammates, some of whom he was working with for the first time.
Typically enough, Morgan, 31, wasted little time in getting to know the likes of Christian Fuchs and Shinji Okazaki, who arrived earlier in the summer, while most of the squad are still familiarising themselves with Monday arrivals N’Golo Kanté and Yohan Benalouane.
“It’s good to be back,” Wes told lcfc.com after the session. “The boys have been working hard for a good few weeks now to get ready for the new season and the new lads look to be settling in well too.
“It was good to get a week’s break to recharge a little bit after the Gold Cup, but I’ve played competitively right through the summer, so I feel fit and ready to go.
“Saturday is a big game for us because we want to make sure we start the season well, so everyone’s focused on making sure we kick off with three points in front of our home fans.”
Morgan’s return will come as a welcome boost to Ranieri, who now has a greater depth of defensive options at his disposal, with Benalouane, Robert Huth, Liam Moore and Marcin Wasilewski among those already vying for central defensive berths.
The Italian will continue to study his options this week ahead of Sunderland arriving on Filbert Way this Saturday, as the Foxes look to start their second season back in the Premier League with a win.
