King Power Stadium once again shimmered in blue to mark Leicester City’s support of World Diabetes Day, as the Club helped local charity Silver Star to spread awareness of a condition suffered by millions.

Past campaigns have seen more than 1,000 buildings and monuments brought to life in beautiful blue in an effort to raise awareness, with this year’s activities having a particular focus on healthy eating.

The campaign highlights this as a cornerstone of global health and a key factor in the fight against diabetes. Experts believe healthy eating can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes as well as providing effective management of the condition and its complications.

It is estimated that almost 400 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes, while five million of those die from it every year. This in turn leads to annual healthcare costs of around $600 billion.

In the United Kingdom alone it is estimated that around three million people suffer from diabetes, with a further 850,000 unaware that they have the condition – 24,000 of those die from causes that could have been avoided through better management of their condition.

Silver Star Diabetes continue to send mobile units around the county on their mission to not only test people for the condition but also to increase awareness of diabetes in Leicestershire and nationally.

These mobile diabetes assessment units travel to local community groups, places of worship and workplaces to provide free diabetes assessments for all while raising awareness of the condition.
