FA Youth Cup: Charlton 2 City 1 (AET)

Posted on: Thu 19 Jan 2012

City's Under-18s suffered extra-time heartbreak in the FA Youth Cup, as Charlton edged a thrilling fourth round encounter.

The young Foxes deservedly took the game beyond 90 minutes when first-year apprentice Michael Cain produced a second-half riposte to Joe Pigott's first-half Addicks' opener.

But the tie was settled by the outcome of two penalties - one missed by City before the end of normal time and one scored by Charlton in the added period.

Jak McCourt was the unfortunate man for the Foxes, seeing his spot-kick saved by Addicks keeper Dillon Phillips after Tom Hopper had been fouled in the box, before Pigott held his nerve in extra-time after Tobi Sho-Silva had been felled.

Pigott's double ensured it would be Charlton hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round, but City will feel they more than matched their opponents from the capital - dominating long periods of the tie, played at non-league Welling United.

Matt Robinson puts in a full-blooded challenge.

The 'hosts' made a bright start when Oliver Muldoon's header brought a good save from Conor Brennan and took the lead courtesy of Pigott, who converted a pass from the lively Sho-Silva.

But City's response was impressive and Joe Dodoo forced Phillips to work from a dangerous counter-attack just before half-time.

That momentum was carried into the second half and Cain quickly levelled the scores - volleying home impressively as a cross came his way from the right.

Sho-Silva passed up a good chance to re-establish Charlton's lead, missing the target when well-placed, but the second half saw the Foxes take charge.

Hitman Hopper headed a corner fractionally wide, before setting up Harry Panayiotou soon after, but he couldn't keep his shot on target.

Steven Smith competes with Charlton scorer Joe Pigott.

City's pressure looked to have paid off in the closing stages when Hopper was caught by the high foot of Semi Ajayi, only for Phillips to thwart the unlucky McCourt from the spot.

Extra-time proved end-to-end as Callum Harriott forced Brennan into action from another Sho-Silva cross, before Matt Robinson fired over at the other end.

But when Sho-Silva was brought down by Steven Smith in the box right at the end of the first period, Pigott seized the chance to put the Addicks back in front.

Panayiotou headed inches over and Robinson saw an effort fly just wide in the second period, but the Foxes were unable to send the tie to penalties.

They can, however, take pride from what was a terrific effort in an entertaining tie.
