Sergio Just Can't Wait To Get Going
New signing Sergio Hellings says he just can't wait to get down to business after completing a 'dream' move to Leicester City today (Tuesday).
The 22-year-old former Ajax and Anderlecht midfielder, who has represented Holland at all youth levels up to under 20s, jetted in to East Midlands airport on Friday for talks with boss Martin Allen, before the deal was concluded this morning.
And speaking in his first interview since touching down on British soil, Hellings confirmed that the lure of a move to England was one that he just couldn't turn down.
He said: "This is a fantastic move for me. Leicester is a great club and one that I have heard many good things about.
"I am very excited about the fact that I have got the opportunity to come and play in England. It's every player's dream to play over here and I just can't wait to get started.
"As a player I feel that I can attack and defend well. I think my style of play will be suited to England."
Hellings was brought up on the 'Total Football' approach adopted by Ajax, and says he owes much to the Amsterdam club for his footballing education.
He added: "Ajax was a great place to learn my football and they are still very much in my heart. As a player you cannot ask for a better education. It was fantastic.
"I grew up playing alongside Wesley Sneijder, Rafael Van der Vaart, Johnny Heitinga. We had some fantastic role models to look up to when we were kids - for instance the likes of Edgar Davids, who is still a great player today."
Hellings took the chance of a tour of the Walkers Stadium during his visit, and said he was more than impressed with his new surroundings.
"I have been shown around the stadium and it is very nice. I am really looking forward to playing there.
"Some people have also told me that the fans are amazing - so I am looking forward to playing in front of them."
A big money move to Leeds fell through at the last moment at the start fo the 2005-06 campaign, but Hellings confirmed that he was delighted to finally get his chance to play in the English leagues.
"I almost signed for Leeds a couple of years ago, but it was cancelled at the last moment. That was disappointing for me at the time, but now I am really happy to have got the chance to play for Leicester."
