Head To Head: Cheltenham

Posted on: Mon 01 Sep 2008

HEAD TO HEAD
The two clubs have never met before in a competitive fixture. They have, however, met three times in friendly fixtures. Two of these are generally classed as featuring a City reserve team, whilst the other was staged behind closed doors.

EARLY MEETINGS
The two reserve friendlies both took place in Cheltenham. In November 1936, City won 3-1, and that scoreline was repeated exactly in March 1952.

RECENT HISTORY
The most recent meeting was originally scheduled for Whaddon Road in July 2007. However, due to the extensive flooding in Gloucestershire at that time, the game was switched to the Walkers Stadium at short notice and played behind closed doors. City won that fixture 2-0, thanks to strikes from Matty Fryatt and Darren Kenton.

FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS
There has only been one direct transfer between the two clubs over the years: Peter Rushworth was signed in November 1951 for £1,350 but never progressed beyond City's reserve team. The 1952 friendly in Cheltenham was agreed as part of the transfer arrangements. Other players with connections to both clubs are Ernest Vickerstaffe, Willie Clarke, Mark Gayle, Russell Hoult and Carl Muggleton.
