Leicester City boss, Nigel Pearson, was characteristically low-key in reflecting on Monday's hard grind to victory at Reading, even though the three points hoisted the club to fifth in the Coca-Cola Championship.
The struggling Royals gave a good account of themselves and made several chances, but City's well-known defensive strength meant Martyn Waghorn's solitary strike was enough for the win.
Pearson said: "I will be the first to admit our goal, at times, had a bit of a charmed life, but having said that we were playing against a side who are very low in confidence at the moment. Although the game was too open for my liking, we still made chances ourselves but we were probably fortunate to win."
It was a fourth clean sheet in five games, a key to the recent good run, and Pearson added: "Yes, but we need to play better than that. I think this illustrates this league. When you are not playing well you have to make sure you dig in well. Even though we were not at our best, we were still prepared to stick in there. There are always areas to work on, always things we can improve but there were good aspects to that."
"We got good challenges in, good blocks in and defended set plays very well but like I say it was a bit too easy for them to get attempts in on goal. You have days like that. We played well against Derby last week, played some good football and ended up drawing the game."
"That is how football is, you can't get too disappointed when things don't go your way and there is no point preening your feathers when you get a win like this. But what is important is that we look at the performance and work at the things we need to work on. Having said that, it was a fantastic result."
City lie just three points off top spot and can close that gap if they notch a third away league win of the season at QPR, on Friday night, but Pearson, as usual, is not getting carried away. He said: "It is a tight league, there are a lot of teams involved in the promotion shake-up and there are a number of sides who fancy stringing a run of results together, so it is a bit early to be talking about how the league is shaping up. Suffice to say, it is a tough league and we knew that from the start."
