Waghorn Thrives On Competition

Posted on: Fri 30 Oct 2009

Leicester City striker, Martyn Waghorn's super goal at Reading was enough to take the points, but not enough to see him complete the 90 minutes, underlining the healthy competition for places right now.

He was replaced by DJ Campbell, while Steve Howard came on for Matty Fryatt and harking back to the 1-1 draw at Coventry, where manager Nigel Pearson brought on three new front men at once, including Waghorn who equalised, there is proof of how strong City are in that department.

Waghorn said: "There are four or five strikers who could start any game. It is difficult but hopefully I can get a start again."

He started with Fryatt alongside, City's top marksman seeing two one-on-ones saved by the Reading keeper but Waghorn felt the partnership worked well.

He said: "He is a good player to play with. Everyone misses chances and if I had been in those positions, I might not have scored either and I have no doubt he will get those goals. He is a proven scorer, a good player and will score goals."

It was Waghorn's first starting place and by scoring he has furthered his claim to stay in the team but will it be enough to be in there against QPR on Friday?

He said: "We will see. They are flying at the moment but we have got to make sure we have got enough to beat them."

"It was great to be starting and great to come off the bench those other times but I am just happy to be here and playing. To be on from the start, to score a goal as well, to try to prove the point that I can start and I can score goals was great and hopefully I will keep going."
