"Gaffer Has Nice Selection Issues"

Posted on: Tue 23 Feb 2010

Leicester City captain Matt Oakley says he wouldn't want to be in Nigel Pearson's shoes, given that there is such a battle for places at the Walkers Stadium. It's a nice selection headache for the Foxes' manager but a headache nonetheless.

City have named an unchanged side for the last three matches, leaving the likes of Dany N'Guessan and Steve Howard on the bench. Whilst January signings Nobby Solano and Alex Bruce are still yet to make their first starts for the club.

Pearson admitted that it might be time to make changes, following City's 1-1 draw with Plymouth on Saturday, but after six games unbeaten Oakley believes there are tough decisions ahead for the gaffer.

"I wouldn't want to be a manager! It's difficult when the team are playing well, players don't want to miss games when they're in form. But then you've got the other lads, who are losing sharpness and are champing at the bit to play."

Oakley hasn't missed a game for Leicester since being an unused subsitute in the 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United at the end of November, and says it's easier to pick a team when you're fighting for the play-offs rather than facing a relegation battle.

"It's a nice decision for him to make being where we are in the league. He's (Pearson) not having to pick sides when we're third or fourth from bottom and you can't win a game.

At least we're picking points up and we've had good performances. So that's his problem!"

Leicester have only drawn a blank once in their past five games, in the recent 0-0 draw with tonight's opponents Doncaster, but Oakley expects a different approach from Sean O'Driscoll's side at the Keepmoat Stadium.

"They came for a draw at our place, everyone could see that. It was a frustrating night, the fans get frustrated when we don't get in front early on but I think it's going to be a different game.

They are definitely a side that's better at home, they like to play football, but I was surprised with the way they set up at our place. But maybe that's respect to us, we've been in good form so teams are starting to change the way that they play."
