Pearson On Wednesday Showdown

Posted on: Fri 05 Mar 2010

Foxes boss Nigel Pearson has told his City squad that they mustn't underestimate the challenge of Sheffield Wednesday this weekend as his side look for a third Championship win in a row.

Pearson, who made over 150 appearances for the Hillsborough club, believes that despite the fact Wednesday currently lie in the Championship drop zone they are still a difficult prospect.

"We're playing against a side that are fighting for their lives. The game comes on the back of a bad result for them, but it'll be a tough game regardless of what people think."

Last week City beat a Nottingham Forest chasing automatic promotion, this weekend's game is very different with Sheffield Wednesday desperate to stave off relegation, and Pearson believes every team in the Championship has something to play for.

"You look from top to bottom and clubs are either looking over their shoulder or have aspirations of pushing on into the playoff places.

It remains a very tight league, we've had a decent run of late but the only important game now is the next one."

Sheffield Wednesday were galvanised by new manager Alan Irvine at the start of the yearbut a recent run of four defeats in five, including last week's 5-0 reverse at Reading, has plunged them into the drop zone.

Pearson believes that it was Wednesday's start to the season, which saw them win just one of their first eight games, that sees them in a fight for survival.

"It's always difficult when you have a bad start. Plymouth are in the same situation, they started the season poorly and even when you have a good run you're always susceptible of being sucked back into it.

Wednesday have found that. They had an excellent January but still find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle."
