City Swoop For Vaughan

Posted on: Thu 11 Mar 2010

Leicester City have signed striker James Vaughan from Everton on a month long loan deal. City have the option to extend the deal to the end of the season.

Vaughan, 21, has struggled with injuries since becoming the Premier League's youngest ever goal scorer netting on his debut against Crystal Palace in April 2005 aged just sixteen.

The Birmingham born forward joined Derby County on loan earlier in the season but made only two appearances before returning to Everton with a torn cartliage. Vaughan marked his return from injury with two goals in as many games, scoring in the wins over Burnley and Carlisle.

Vaughan has made appearances for both the England U-19 and England U-21 teams, and was a substitute in Everton's FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea in May 2009.

City Chairman Milan Mandaric says he has always pledged his support to manager Nigel Pearson.

"I have always said I will support Nigel, and a signing like this signals our intentions as we try and move the club forward."

Vaughan was wanted by a number of other Championship clubs, and Mandaric praised the co-operation of Everton in ensuring that the striker opted to join the  Foxes.

"I am very grateful to my friend Chairman Bill Kenwright at Everton for allowing us to sign the player, there were a lot of clubs interested in him so we are very pleased to be able to sign him."

Vaughan may make his debut against play-off rivals Cardiff City this weekend, and Mandaric believes that the signing shows just how intent the Foxes are on gaining promotion to the Premier League.

"Hopefully signing James will show the club's ambition and that we are moving in the right direction."
