Posted on: Tue 23 Mar 2010

Alan 'The Birch' Birchenall has launched his traditional charity run at the Walkers Stadium and you can sponsor him! This year's run, due to take place on May 2, raises funds for Help for Heroes.

The Birch was joined by representatives of the armed forces for the occasion as he unveiled his plans for the 30th run:

"Every year I have said it is my last run - after 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years. However, after completing 29 runs - I can't believe it - I'm still on this planet, so I'll have to do the run again!

"Once again, it has been difficult to choose the charity as there are so many worthwhile causes, but the proceeds of my 30th run will go to Help for Heroes.

"I have my own views about our armed forces being in Iraq and Afghanistan, but these are our young guys and girls who suffer not only fatalities but also terrible injuries.

"I have been to funerals of service people on behalf of Leicester City and it seemed only right that we dedicate the 30th run to Help for Heroes."

The Birch, who has traditionally been backed by City fans, the team and celebrities alike, is aiming to complete at least 50 laps during the 90 minutes before City's last league game of the season against Middlesbrough on May 2 at the Walkers Stadium.

Leicester City's game against Middlesbrough will be the club's official Help for Heroes fixture.

Help for Heroes provides care for wounded army personnel. They are also the official charity partner of the Football League.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "Thank you to Alan and the very best of luck for your charity run. Your support will make a huge difference to some incredible heroes.

"Your help and the help of everyone at the Football League helps us provide direct and practical support for our injured service personnel.

"We may not be able to prevent our blokes from being wounded, but, together, we can help them get better. Thank you from all at Help for Heroes."
