City boss Nigel Pearson was delighted to see his team get back to winning ways with a thumping 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at the Walkers Stadium.
City had lost their previous four games, but the win keeps them in the top six, and Pearson says it was the perfect tonic ahead of the last four games of the season.
"We needed it, no doubt about that, the result was always going to be more important than the performance and that turned out to be the case in all honesty.
In the first half, we were very fortunate to go in two-nil up. We played much better in the last two games and got nothing out of them so it just shows you how tough the league is.
"The fact that we lost four games in a row yet were still in the play-offs is testament to the work the players have done."
Martyn Waghorn's double helped City to secure a vital theree points, and Pearson praised the impact that the twenty year old had not just on the game but throughout the season.
"He has been a great loan signing for us and I am sure Sunderland will feel it has been good for him as well so he is going very well for us. There is still quite a way to go this season but he has been playing his part.
"The fact that he is playing first-team football and is in a first-team selection process is a big step up for him. Players will learn as much from the players they are playing with as from the coaches. I am sure it has been a good experience for him and I know he is enjoying himself but like I say we still have quite a way to go."
The City fans have taken Waghorn to their hearts since he arrived in the summer, and were calling for the striker to be signed on a permanent basis. But Pearson believes it may be difficult to secure such a deal for the young striker.
"Why would Sunderland want to sell him and it is a very big question mark if we could afford him. That is not to say I don't echo their sentiments but this is for him a loan situation and we have been clear all year what the situation is."
