Berner Reflects On “Unbelievable” Result

Posted on: Fri 18 Jun 2010

Switzerland's shock 1-0 win over Spain ignited a 2010 World Cup that had previously failed to fully capture the imagination.

Gelson Fernandes' second half strike proved enough to beat a side that had started the tournament as the bookies favourites.

Leicester City have their own Swiss ace in their ranks in left back Bruno Berner who has been capped sixteen times and was back in Zurich to enjoy the victory.

Berner says the whole country is on a high after seeing their team beat Vicente del Bosque's side.

"It was an outstanding performance from Switzerland and the whole country is up at the moment, everybody is really pleased about a huge win over the European Champions.

Everybody just feels fantastic at the moment."

Switzerland now face games against Chile and Honduras and are big favourites to qualify from Group H to reach the knock-out stages for only the third time in 56 years.

Berner says the aim was always to reach at least the last sixteen, and the City defender is now hoping Ottmar Hitzfeld's side can see it through.

"Qualification was always the goal even before the game against Spain and now we have a great chance of going through to the last sixteen.

What is interesting will be what happens next. It's great to enjoy the victory and it's unbelievable for the Swiss history, but it'll be interesting to see what happens in the game against Chile."
