Slovenia Blog: Part 3

Posted on: Mon 19 Jul 2010

Pre-season is the time of year when managers and players are given the licence to try something a bit different.

It's no secret that Paulo Sousa has tried to change the way Leicester play since taking over from Nigel Pearson at the beginning of July, but that isn't where the experimentation ends.

In the first half of City's friendly win over NK Aluminij, Nicky Adams was given a go at right back.

Playing midfielders at right back is nothing new, the likes of Michael Essien, James Milner and even Steven Gerrard have played there at one point in time.

Whilst Adams would be the first to acknowledge that he still has work to do there are plenty of signs that he could be a success in the role.

Firstly in terms of improvement, Adams has people around him who can help his game a great deal.

On the training field, Adams will be helped massively by Chris Powell. Powell has made over 750 appearances not to mention five international caps as a full back, and is determined to help Adams excel in his new position.

On the pitch, Adams has the likes of Chris Weale, Michael Morrison and Jack Hobbs for company in the Foxes' backline. These three are not only very good players, but good communicators as well.

As for Adams himself, he has plenty of the skills needed by the modern day full back.

The way the likes of Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson and Dani Alves play means it is now crucial to be able to get forward from defence. As an attack minded player Adams could be a master of using the overlap and utilising his good delivery from wide areas.

Defensively the former Bury man will improve with every training session and game he plays, and he is certainly the kind of whole hearted player that will put his all into making the right back position his own.
